A Reason to Visit South Street Again: Las Bugambilias.

Las Bugambilias – 148 South St, Philadelphia, PA.
1(215) 922-3190

It is no secret that I love Mexican food.  Often places can be disappointing so a lot of the time I goto the same restaurant over and over again.  My friend Marci took me out of my comfort zone to a place that I had never even heard of.  Much to my surprise it was on South Street, a street that I usually try to stay far from (it has really gone downhill as of late).  As soon as I walked in, I knew that this food was going to be the real deal.  The decor made me feel as though I was in a restaurant in Mexico.  The first thing you see when you walk in is a full bar with all different types of tequilas.  It is a smaller space so I do suggest making reservations for dinner. It was pretty packed on a Monday night and we quickly found out why!

Marci and I were seated pretty quickly and our server was really nice and knowledgeable about the menu.  We knew we had to try the margaritas… When in Rome, right?  I played it safe with La Granada.  It was delicious and even better than I expected.  The waitress suggested that Marci try the Pineapple-Chipotle margarita since she likes everyyyything spicy.  She enjoyed her drink as well.  They were on the larger side.

La Granada $11.00 – Herradura Reposado, freshly squeezed lime juice, and imported Pome pomegranate liqueur, garnished with fresh pomegranate seeds and a slice of grapefruit.

Pineapple-Chipotle Margarita $11.00 - House chipotle infused tequila, Patron Reposado and pineapple juice served on the rocks with a salt and sugar rimmed glass, garnished with pineapple.

Chips & Salsa - These had to be home-made chips!  The salsa was definitely fresh.  One was described as being ‘hot’ but was pretty tasty for what I am used to.

These chips were crunchy and delicious too.  They came with some fresh salsa and another salsa that the waitress described as being spicier.  It was tolerable.  We were almost going to ask for a second serving when our nachos arrived.  We chose to have ours with chicken and the plate was empty in less than 5 minutes!  You have to get these as an appetizer.  We inhaled them.  Yum.

Nachos de la Frontera $7.00 – Home-made corn tortilla chips, topped with refried black beans, melted queso Chihuahua, salsa Mexicana, crema Mexicana, and your choice of chicken, ground beef, or grilled vegetables.  Additional toppings $1 extra.

Quesadilla de Pollo $7.00 –  Two grilled flour tortillas filled with shredded chicken breasts, queso Chihuahua and salsa Mexicana.

This was the only selection that left much to be desired.  The quesadilla was definitely no frills.  I would not recommend it and neither would Marci.  But that’s what you get for coming to a restaurant with so many options and getting a dang quesadilla, girl!

My sandwich, on the other hand, was SO good.  I cannot remember the last time I got so messy eating something.  The chicken was super flavorful and juicy.  The black bean spread was a great touch.  I also liked the Oaxaca cheese, which I had never had before.  If you like chicken sandwiches, this one will knock your socks off =)

Torta Mexicana $10.50 - Achiote marinated chicken breast with a black bean spread, tomato, avocado, onion, melted Oaxaca cheese and chipotle salsa.

We forced ourselves to try a dessert.  It was some sort of cake and very good.  From what I understand, all of their desserts are made in house as well.

We already promised ourselves that we were going back to try some of their fuller dinner options when we are feeling hungrier.  I will warn that the dinner platters start at about $20.00.  From what we saw on our first visit (minus the quesadilla) it is going to be worth every cent.  They also serve breakfast, so keep that in mind if you are ever in the area early and your stomach is rumbling.

Have you been here before?  What did you think?

Cute Lunch Date @ Revolution House

It was beautiful outside this past Friday afternoon in the city.  My boyfriend suggested that we try “that place” on the corner of 2nd and Market, since he knew it had a rooftop deck.

It’s cute, right?  And it is only 2 subway stops away from Northern Liberties in ::gasps:: Olde City.  It was empty downstairs and as expected, everyone was dining outside on the 2nd floor deck.  The server was polite and attentive enough and we put in an order for the White Bean Dip ($7) to start.  Lots of people around us were having pizza from Revolution House’s wood oven, but we chose the healthier route this time.  It was very tasty.  The lemon juice made it taste even better.

There were a lot of interesting things on the menu like the Lasagna Cupcake, Crab Cannoli and Lollipop Chicken.  Erring on the side of caution since I was pretty hungry, I kept it simple and ordered the Chicken Sandwich ($10).  It came with pineapple which I did not even notice until my boyfriend pointed it out to me!  I subbed salad on the side instead of french fries.

This sandwich and the burger that Domenic ordered both came on pita bread.  I think it was a nice touch for the chicken sandwich and a needed break from the usual thick burger bun that chicken sandwiches usually come on.  The flavor was just right.  I would definitely have this again, after trying some of the other interesting menu items first.

I enjoyed this spot.  I really had no idea what to expect but I ended up being happy with my lunch and the atmosphere.  I can see myself visiting again in the future and maybe trying out their brunch menu!

This was the view of 2nd & Market Streets, Penn’s Landing and Ben Franklin Bridge from the deck of Revolution House.

Taking a stroll after lunch on Penn’s Landing.

Goofing around in the sun :)

DIY Clip-In Hair Extensions

This is a post that I was dying to create because I hear of so many girls paying a lot of money for hair extensions.  With online orders, there is the chance that the color you order is not the best match or that the quality is not what you expected.

If you never experimented with weaves, you may be a little intimidated by the thought of creating your own at home.  But, it is pretty simple and does not take much time at all.  You can pick up your supplies on Friday at 5, and be out the door with your long hair by 8.  Trust me!

You are going to need to pick up a few items.

  1. Hair ($55/pack)
  2. Hair Glue ($3.00)
  3. Needle & Thread ($2.00)
  4. Wig Clips (1.99/2)

Most importantly, you need your hair!    I have always used Outre Premium New Yaki Color 27.  The texture is perfect for my hair and the color blends nicely.  You can also play around with using some dark colors underneath if you get addicted like I am.  The pack of 18 inch Human Hair only cost me $55 at a beauty supply store.  If you are being cost conscious, (especially if you are buying three packs or more) try going to a store to find out your colors and price and then shop around a bit or order the hair online if you can find it cheaper.  This is my 2nd time making extensions, so I am just adding different lengths to my collection.

You also need hair glue.  If you have darker hair, use black.  I should have used the white/clear glue but I left it open and it was all dried up.  Typical!  I had to use the black.  It did not end up making a difference.  It just looks ugly (not once it is mixed in with your hair though!)

Then, you need your thread and needle.  You are going to have to do a little sewing, grandma.

Last, but certainly not least, you need wig clips.  Again, try to get a color closer to what color hair you have just to be safe.  All of these things can be found at your beauty supply store.  Not so much Sally’s but more like the store where you can buy a wig.  If you don’t live near one, come to Philly because there are hundreds.

The hair comes on a long strip.  I like to layer the strips in at least two layers.  Three is best to make a nice, thick clip-in.  Remember that it will shed and eventually get thinner and thinner.

Cut the strips into sizes you would like.  I just put the whole strip against my scalp where I think I want the clip and trim it.  Then I trim two more the same size to make one clip.

Lay the one strip of hair and put a line of glue across the top.  Then you take the second strip and press and hold it down near the top of the first strip.  Make another line of glue and place the third and final strip onto the two initial ones.

Let these dry for a bit.  Now its starting to look like something, right?

(Forgive how sloppy these are.  I would have liked to use the white glue which dries clear but sadly I did not have it.  This was my second go at this so I didn’t care much because I know that they do not need to look perfect here but they will still look fine once installed)

Then, you take the needle, thread and wig clips.  You are going to sew the clips onto the hair that you have glued together.  Depending on the length of the hair you glued together, you are going to sew 2-3 clips onto your strips.

Voila!  A clip-in hair extension custom measured to your own head!  Curl it, cut it, make it your own ♥

I have included my hair texture because I am always curious about that sort of thing….  The first is after washing, the second is after blow drying and flat ironing.

I wear these every once in a while.  To be honest, it is too much work to be an everyday look for me since getting my hair straight is a tedious process as is.  People often think it is my real hair… or maybe they are messing with me lol…. You decide!

I take pictures in the bathroom mirror a lot.  Actually any mirror is fine.  The first step is admitting that you have a problem, right?

Get Music Off of Any iPhone/iPod into Your iTunes

A lot of people have been having issues lately with their laptops giving up on them…  Myself included.  I thought that I was going to lose all the music that I had in my iTunes.  This included over 40 CDs that I took the time transferring (it took DAYS).

So my laptop is garbage and I am stuck with 1500 songs on my iPhone.  I am left with no option to transfer them to my new computer via iTunes or any way to add to them without losing them all forever.  Right?  Wrong!  There is this awesome program for only $19.95 called iRip.

It allows you to transfer music and EVERYTHING else from your iPod or iPhone right onto you PC or MAC.  This includes videos, music, ringtones, pictures and books.

It’s pretty cool because whenever friends stop by, they can plug into my Mac and in no time, I have now added their music collection to my iTunes.  I now have close to 4,000 songs (which is a bunch more than I started with!).

I hope this program can help some of you that are stuck in the same situation that I was.  I saw about 4 people recently having this issue recently on my Facebook.  Instead of explaining on their wall next time, I can now just link to this!  Feel free to do the same.

If anyone knows of another way to do this, feel free to share it in the comments.

Check it Out : http://thelittleappfactory.com/irip/

Fifty Bucks Well Spent.

So I know this blog is titled ‘Phillyosophy 101′ but I can’t forget my Jersey roots!

Atlantic City, New Jersey is one of the most fun and unique places to venture off to.  Especially since it is only an hour outside the city.  I got this deal sent to my e-mail today and figured I would share it with you all.

For $50 bucks plus some resort taxes and fees, you can stay at Tropicana for TWO nights.  That’s an awesome weekday getaway.  Tropicana has an IMAX theatre, a Comedy Club, Karaoke Bar, and plenty of places to eat, drink and gamble.  A cab ride to any casino in the city is never more than $13 (pretty sure) bucks if you decide to hop around like I tend to.

Some people don’t think of going to AC during the winter but there is tons of indoor adult fun to be had.  Call in sick.  It’ll be worth it.

Here’s the deal.  Just use the promo code.

Book by 3/12/2012

And another hook up… A friend of mine created an application for Android and iPhone called ClubPeeks.  It is basically a nightlife survival guide.

ClubPeeks lets you see when and where the party is going to be, bottle service rates, pictures at the different clubs, access to guest lists and more!  If you are going to be partying it up in AC, this app is a must have.  Just find ClubPeeks in the App Store or Android Market.

Let me know if you go and what you did.  Put $20 on black for me =)

Some Damn Good Brunch @ El Camino Real

El Paso Omelet - Smoked brisket, Cooper sharp cheese, smoked onions, tomatoes and jalapenos

If you are like most 20-somethings that I know, your Friday nights involve lots and lots of booze.  This usually leads to a late start on Saturday morning.  What better way to cure a hangover than a delicious brunch complete with some tasty alcoholic beverages?  If you have any other cures, please share.  Until then, El Camino Real in Northern Liberties is my #1 remedy.

El Camino Real (1040 N. 2nd St) in Northern Liberties is one of my favorite spots for food and drinks.  It is located right outside of the Piazza at Schmidts and close to a huge free parking lot.  The staff is super friendly, the decor is always changing (check out the original window art) and pretty much everything on the menu is delish.

They just re-vamped their brunch menu and I have yet to be dissapointed.  The menu is  extensive (I have included it towards the end) and the flavors are simply amazing.  I never knew Tex/Mex and breakfast could go together so well.  Take a look…

Breakfast Burrito - Scrambled eggs, cheddar, chipotle crema, pico and guacamole. Served with potato hash.

2 Sides of Bacon

Chilaquiles - Crispy corn tortilla chips, Verde, mixed cheeses, scrambled eggs and queso fresco.

Close up of Chilaquiles dish

My boyfriend got the Austin Omelet (pictured below).  Half way through, I had to remind him that he was eating seitan hot links.  He forgot he wasn’t eating ‘real’ meat.  The flavors are that great.

Austin Omelet - Homemade seitan hot link, Cooper Sharp cheese, and charred salsa

Side of hot links w/ toast

…And a tequila sunrise, or 5.

I hope that you get a chance to check this place out.  If you don’t make it for brunch on the weekends, keep in mind that they have what I consider the best Mexican happy hour around…

Burgers Worth Blogging About.

I love turkey burgers.  Many people tend to say that they are not as good as a traditional hamburger.  I attempted to circumvent that notion by adding something that makes most carnivore’s mouths water with a mere mention: BACON!

What I Used*:

  • Fresh Ground Turkey (I used 3 pounds of 85/15)
  • Bacon
  • Parsley
  • Salt/Pepper
  • Garlic
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Panko Style Bread Crumbs
  • Eggs
  • Any toppings that you enjoy
  • George Foreman Grill or similar (can use a frying pan too!)

*I am not a huge fan of measuring for recipes such as this.  I feel that it depends on your personal taste and how many people you are preparing for to decide how much of each ingredient you are using.

  1. First, I began preparing all of the ingredients that needed to be chopped.  This included the parsley, onion and garlic.  To help the burgers hold together, it is important to make sure you chop these ingredients into fairly small pieces.  Any tips for getting parsley finer than this?
  2. Depending on your preference, you can start cooking the bacon while you are chopping up your ingredients, before or after.  I was not pressed for time, so I did this after.  I actually cut the bacon in half because for me, it is easier to handle in the pan.
  3. Once the bacon was cooked and dried with paper towels, I placed it into the fridge to help expedite the cooling process.  At this point I turned on the grill I was going to be using.
  4. After a few minutes, the bacon was ready to be crumbled.  I used scissors to start cutting up some of the pieces and then began using my hands.  The result was some rather large hunks of bacon which I felt gave the burgers an awesome flavor all the way through.
  5. Next,  I put two eggs and the turkey mixture into a bowl.  I added all of the chopped items along with the bacon, breadcrumbs, salt and pepper.  I then added a good amount of Worcestershire sauce.  This is a key ingredient that helps keep the burgers moist while grilling.  I kept adding breadcrumbs until I was happy with the consistency.
  6. I made sure to work the mixture in my hands for a bit to create a nice tight burger before popping them onto the pre-heated George Foreman grill.  I am not sure that this qualifies as “Healthy Cooking” though.  Sorry, George.
  7. Undercooked foods freak me out so I cut one half way through the middle to check for temperature and color after about 6 minutes.  Now just put on your favorite dressings and eat on your favorite bun.  I promise you will be in love!  You can put any extra uncooked burgers into the freezer in Ziploc bags to be used later.         These burgers came out so juicy and the bacon taste was to die for.  Let me know if you try out this recipe or something similar.  Add your recipe additions or any thoughts and ideas in the comment section!

And there you have it!
